Biodiversity Gardens

Our purpose

Biodiversity Gardens was created for the purpose of promoting, through school gardens, the conservation of agricultural biodiversity, circular economy models, and environmental education. The project, the result of a collaboration between Ecoembes and Fundación Global Nature, allows students to understand in a fun and practical way the importance of resource use and sustainable consumption from an early age.

The Biodiversity Gardens project

Through Biodiversity Gardens, we train teachers to set up and maintain their own school gardens as a pedagogical tool for environmental awareness and education

  • We have trained over 1,800 teachers by providing courses and workshops on the continuous operation of gardens, the cultivation of different local horticultural varieties, and the efficient use of available resources and spaces. At the same time, Biodiversity Gardens hosts workshops on organic waste composting, recycling, and reuse, promoting waste hierarchy and the circular economy. We provide personalized online advice and create forums where professionals can get their questions answered by specialized technicians.

  • We provide educational resources, guides, and manuals that contain practices and advice related to biodiversity, food, sustainability, and the circular economy. In addition, the dissemination of informative content through media and social networks has contributed to environmental awareness, highlighting shared responsibility and the key role of citizens in the ecological transition.

  • By collaborating with organizations and local governments, events have been held at 1,214 schools, reaching over 20,000 students. The training of educators is the foundation of the project's philosophy, which, along with the transfer of knowledge to students and other NGOs, defines the success and continuity of the initiative. We continue working with the goal of increasing the number of schools that have their own garden so that students can enjoy and learn about the importance of agricultural biodiversity conservation and the circular economy.

The Fundación Global Nature and the importance of collaboration

The Fundación Global Nature is a leading environmental organization focused on nature conservation. It centers its activities on habitat and species protection, the sustainability of the agri-food sector, and corporate sustainability. With over 30 years of experience and international recognition, reflected in more than 20 awards, the foundation is renowned for its technical expertise, knowledge, and commitment to environmental conservation.

The Biodiversity Gardens project was launched in 2017, born from the shared interest of Global Nature and Ecoembes to promote responsible and conscious consumption, raise awareness about recycling and reuse, and conserve agricultural biodiversity. The ability to establish synergies and alliances is an intrinsic element of the Biodiversity Gardens philosophy, ensuring that the pursuit of new collaborations with public administrations and other entities in civil society is a constant that enriches the initiative and expands its reach to more educators and schools. In this regard, the incorporation of the Association for Environmental Education and Consumer Rights (ADEAC) has played a key role in the project's development.

However, it is the schools and teachers who implement the Biodiversity Gardens that form the backbone of the project. Their brave commitment to ecology and dedication make it possible to educate an entire new generation of responsible citizens, as we advance together towards the ecological transition.
